Suddenly there is a new sweet aroma in Darien, Georgia. Dale Potts, owner of Sugar Marsh Cottage, recently relocated her thriving specialty candy production facility from Atlanta to Darien, after acquiring a circa 1935 house at 300 Franklin Street to house her sweet creations. The house which faces Vernon Square and was previously owned by Dorothy “Dot” Googe, former Darien City Clerk, provides the perfect setting for Potts’ office, “creative studio,” production and shipping departments.
Sugar Marsh Cottage was born out of Potts’ love for making short bread cookies and toffee as gifts for her friends and family over the years. Once her career in the construction industry slowed enough to allow time to focus on her “first love,” Potts began planning and developing additional sweet products such as chocolate dipped shortbread, and sweet almond toffee and white chocolate mint angel wings, all of which have been designated as “wonderful” by the Atlanta Gourmet Market and the Best of Atlanta.
Although most of Sugar Marsh Cottage goodies are produced specifically for contract clients, specialty gift shops, and resort hotels, Potts plans to open the house/shop one Saturday per month as a shopping day for the public. The confections are also available in downtown Darien at Waterfront Wine and Shops at 107 Broad and on line at www.sugarmarshcottage.com.
